The Challenge

iProov’s facial biometric solutions are used across the world by banks, governments, and other regulated businesses, who all demand the highest rates of security, accuracy, and accessibility. This includes an expectation of compatibility with any device and over any internet connection - a genuine challenge when considered on a global scale and the enormous range of devices this encompasses. 

Testing new features and releases is a critical function in ensuring this necessary quality but the number of devices the iProov team traditionally had access to internally was limited, and sourcing certain popular but challenging models, especially those from South Africa and parts of Asia, was extremely difficult. Often, the hardware simply could not be shipped to the UK or physically accessed by the developers. Virtual device testing or emulator-based testing was not an option, since this is exactly the type of usage the product is designed to detect and would limit the validity of the testing. Besides hardware limitations, when issues were identified on specific devices, there was also a need to re-engage the same individuals for multiple rounds of testing to assess resolution, which became nearly impossible with iProov's large number of verifications per day

As the company expanded globally, it needed a more scalable way to:

• Test the usability of the product on a larger range of real users and real devices
• Validate performance across hundreds of secondary-sourced device types
• Get insights from a large, diverse group of global users to analyze error rates accurately across markets
• Confidently answer: “Is this release working correctly for users everywhere?”

Solution

iProov partnered with Testlio to use their crowdsourced testing capabilities to extend its real-device testing capabilities across multiple countries and device types.

This allowed iProov - on every release - to:

• Conduct real-world usability testing on hundreds of unique devices
• Source in-market testers across Latin America, Southeast Asia, and South Africa
• Validate every step of the face-verification flow under authentic and varied conditions

Testlio is now an integrated part of iProov’s release process, validating performance globally and providing developers with the feedback needed to make targeted improvements, refine functionality, and prevent issues before release.

Results

Testlio has enabled iProov to access real users across over 500 unique devices for every release, including difficult to source models. This has led to the significant expansion of its testing coverage across Latin America, Southeast Asia, and South Africa, where device diversity is especially high. The approach also removed the need to purchase, import, and maintain large volumes of hardware, resulting in over $150,000 in device cost savings.

Each year, Testlio delivers more than 50,000 new facial-scan tests for iProov, providing the volume needed to assess completion rates, understand error patterns, and confirm that releases are stable. Testlio also enabled controlled A/B comparisons by sourcing the same testers for repeated runs, which would typically be impractical for iProov to carry out.

Testlio’s involvement now serves as a consistent validation step for both major annual releases and smaller patch updates, helping iProov make informed release decisions and maintain confidence that each update will work as expected across all devices and regions.
